Thesis, Classes, Union, Rules

Professor McIntosh dismissed us fifteen minutes early today from Language in American Life. Does it mean I’m a dork that I stayed after and talked with her for those fifteen minutes, plus five more?

I had a good reason though - turns out she’ll be here in the spring semester of next year, meaning she may be able to serve on my thesis committee (AGoodThing^tm). I’m really starting to think about what I want my thesis to be about - maybe something about what happens when two frames (see the Wikipedia entry for a poor explanation) interact, or possibly something about the frame of “screens” (computer, tv, movies) and how language changes in those mediums. All things to think about, and I really need to figure out where I want to get my data from…

Following in the academic vein of that rant, courses for next semester:

• ANTH 186b - Linguistic Anthropology (Parmentier)
• SOC 181a - Quantitative Methods of Social Inquiry (Cunningham)
• LGLS 129b - Law, Technology, and Innovation (Jankowich - he seems to have been involved with Creative Commons, and runs CopyNight Cambridge)
• PE 11a sec. 1 - Nautilus/Free Weights (Coven)
• and one of either:
  • JOUR 109b - New Media Landscape (Bass - she’s the executive editor of CIO Magazine)
    or
  • ANTH 130b - Visuality and Culture (Davidov - apparently she makes documentaries)

Comments welcome and appreciated on courses…

I was going to, as the title suggests, go into a long rant about Union stuff, but I’m not in the mood anymore. (Short version: things are running more smoothly than before in large part due to a change in my philosophy… more on this in some other post when I feel like it).

And finally, we come to rules. I was explaining to unnamed Union officer X that there are a few rules governing our lives. Here is my more updated version:

1. Things will happen in life that you don’t like.
2. You can’t let rule #1 get to you
3. Rules #1 and #2 apply in all situations

I’m trying really hard to not let things get to me, and it’s working (I think). Just keeping in mind that mental attitude really helps you (or at least, me) deal when things start piling up…

On a more serious note, if your thesis includes the “word” “blogosphere”, I will kick you in the balls so hard the entire Braver family tree grabs their respective crotches and falls over in pain. ::sweet smile::
